Inspired by Frida Kahlo

Frida inspiration post

When I first discovered Frida Kahlo’s work there was an instant connection. The surrealism of her paintings and self portraits which represented so much concurrent sorrow, strength and beauty spoke to me and as I learned more about her life, I was even further compelled. I particularly love one quote contributed to her:

“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.”

On top of all this was her personal style: a mix of traditional mexican embroidered shirts and skirts, ornate jewelry and floral hair adornments. Plus name another woman that can rock a unibrow and a mustache and still look gorgeous ? –Besides your Great Auntie Mae of course!- Her clothes are a part of a newer exhibit at the museum in mexico city devoted to her work. Here are a few items inspired by the wonderful Frida Kahlo.

1. Mexican embroidered flower dress by LivingTextiles on Etsy. 2. Embroidered cross stitch hoop portrait of Frida Kahlo by Lucky Jackson. 3. Hand woven rocker from Urban Outfitters. 4. Floral hair clips by Adorn Daily. 5.  Baneberry tassel pendant from Anthropologie.

I have a confession. I love thrift stores, antique stores and all things vintage! There is a thrill of finding something unique. that may have a story and giving it a new life. Vintage clothes are the best (hey, I like to look eclectic and artsy, so sue me) but house hold items are always neat. Recently I stopped by a little vintage shop down the street thats within walking distance (read: trouble) and behold look what I found! Two african american themed cameo portraits! I’m still trying to find their origins but so far no dice.

I decided to put them in my guest bedroom in combination with a my hand-painted ampersand art and a nigerian fan I bought at a festival.
